"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before
this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to
Earth." -John F. Kennedy
President John F. Kennedy focused NASA on sending a man to the moon by the end of the 1960's. The NASA administrator at the time was James E. Webb. NASA funded, created, and launched many of the U.S space launches. NASA was the program that got Apollo 11 to the moon and won the space race for the U.S.

The Soviet Space Program sent out the first satellite in history Sputnik I. They kicked off the Space Race and made the U.S nervous. The Soviets were also the first to send a living thing into space, and to send the first man to space.

On May 25, 1961 President Kennedy challenged the U.S to beat the Soviet Union to putting a man on the moon with his speech. He stunned and excited America with this challenge. Going to the moon was merely a dream for that age of time. Even though Russia was beating us to this dream with the first Satellites and sending people, but America beat them to the goal on the Apollo 11 space launch when America landed a man on the moon.
